Presenting Three Hundred Wines was a very precise choice, based on the conviction that the excellence of the art of Tuscan wine-making can be concentrated in a manageable guide to take with you on œno-gastronomical pilgrimages over charming Tuscany. Each wine has been chosen, therefore, on the basis of its qualitative attractiveness and the intensity and equilibrium which the precious nectar was able to give the “panel test”. As a group of wine tasters – for this first edition – we climbed the vine-planted hills, we walked on the marly soils and breathed in the marine air of the coasts; we visited wineries, meeting the producers and the wine makers, with the sole objective of understanding the genesis of each wine. Each bottle narrates its own story, which is often the story of a passion and a family profession handed down from one generation to the next - if not, of when someone has become “illuminated” in the midst of quite another career, and that someone takes into his or her head to produce wine, and does it well, to the point that in a short time they attain unexpected performances of the highest level. Journeys of men who, almost by way of confirming a regional prerogative, contribute to the development and the stimulus to excel oneself, which Tuscany succeeds in doing every year, thus guaranteeing the prosperity of this sector. In the first edition of Three Hundred Tuscan Wines, excellent results emerge from Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino: the latter was favoured by the first-class year of 2001. The novelties that arrive from Montecucco are interesting, as is the revival of enthusiasm regarding the Maremma which, after the great ordeals of past years and then a lull, returns with renewed animation. All the estates produce ambitious wines with patient ageing in barriques, without indulging in “structured” and “inflated” products, however – always preferring the authentic taste of the grapes and the equilibrium, integrity and refinement of the structure. The effort of choosing among hundreds of other first-class productions, between tastings and “panel tests”, was difficult. But it was even more arduous to find the “right words” to describe the pleasantness which every wine treated us to. Now it is up to you: yours is the enjoyment of encountering the three hundred pearls of Tuscan wine-making. Coming to know them in person at this point is a pleasing necessity. Reports on the Three Hundred Wines Each report is preceded by a heading that gives the name, address, telephone/fax numbers, web site and e-mail address of the estate, and the name of the wine. The page then presents a brief description of the history of the estate and the wine produced. There follow the designation of origin, name of the grapes, analytical data, and production zone. The descriptive text that follows expresses the visual, olfactory and gustative sensations that we received on tasting the wine. Furthermore, in each report there are indications on the winery and the production techniques used by the estate.
